Happy Solstice! Peak of the sun, bridge between ending and beginning (or maybe the other way around?), season of initiation by space, body language, round open eyes and garden dwellers, fruit harvesters, laughing-on-the-back-deck-ers. The sun at its peak knows that it will now die, but delights anyway.
Cancer season is lush as a thriving vegetable garden, soft as a woman’s belly, thick as a bear’s fur and as lethally strong as her jaw. This season, the sun draws our attention to Cancerian themes of nourishment, sensuality, comfort, and creation. Wherever Cancer hangs out in our individual charts is where we are attuned to flux and subtleties, and where we must be deeply nourished, especially now. This is a good time to check in with our needs & the needs of those around us. Ask your moon (and theirs), “What feels good? What hurts? What needs the salty, sensual, cleansing kiss of the (literal or metaphorical) sea?”
This is the first year since 2008 that Cancer season will not be ravaged by Pluto in Capricorn. After a fucking million Cancer seasons (real number: 15) lived under the threatening gaze of Pluto in Capricorn, this Cancer season feels like the relief of a dip in the cool, blue ocean on a hot day. Now the sign of Cancer is finally free from Pluto – all has been purged and regenerated and for once there are no eyes peering out from the dark. There are only citronella candles, a pot of freshly steamed shellfish, and a fresh salad. The land that the last 16 years have stripped bare is starting to grow some new plants, the fungi are coming back, and animals and insects are starting to roam once more.
The cardinal areas of our lives and birth charts (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn – we all have all four somewhere in our charts) have taken a beating in the last 16 years, and this Cancer season is a marvelous time to focus on our emotional, physical, and relational nourishment. Now we can plant the seeds of safety with reasonable hope that they will grow. There may be an early freeze from late summer through November when Pluto briefly re-enters Capricorn for the last time in our lifetimes, but we are just about out of the woods.
