I read somewhere that the Zuni people looked to Pleiades, one of the clusters of stars in the Taurus constellation, to know when it was safe to start planting their crops for the year. They knew that when it disappeared into the western horizon on a spring evening, it was safe to start planting for the year because the danger of frost had passed. When Pleiades reappears in the eastern horizon in the morning, that is when it’s too late to plant, because the first freeze is too close. Quite literally, Taurus has historically acted as an indicator of fertility and safety. It represents a window of time when the moment is ripe.

Kyōsuke Chinai, Cherry Blossom Landscape

To be a Taurus is to rebel endlessly with every fiber of one’s being against the way that we as humans are treated as property, against being turned into an object and owned, against a society that only knows how to exploit and extract from living things, never appreciating what is found but always looking with an open, drooling mouth, and against a world that tells the lie that life is work and pleasure is only earned, if that.

To be a Taurus is to be one of the few still intact, still fecund, fertile and unpredictable, still whole. Taurus does not need others, but wants them as additions and pairings, in addition to self-devotion. Taurus is protected by acres of fruit trees and vegetable gardens, not briars and moats and armies.

To be a Taurus is to drench yourself in the moment, to stay where you are, and to create as much ease and seamlessness as possible. Taurus is an artist, an extraordinarily deep thinker, and a creature of both comfort and growth, but Taurus grows and moves slowly, following only the pace of the earth.

Taurus season starts on April 19th this year, and I want to fully open up the archetype of this sign. In this article, I’ll be discussing the core components of what makes this sign what it is, including:

☆ The symbol of the Bull

☆ Taurus’ supposed distaste for Mars (and why this is a little weird)

☆ Taurus’ association with Venus and the moon

☆ What it means for Taurus to be the fixed earth sign

This became more of an opus than I initially intended it to be, so get comfy (‘tis the season).
