Our second eclipse of the season is this week, on October 2nd: a solar eclipse in Libra, at 10º and closely conjunct Black Moon Lilith and Mercury.
This eclipse is angry.
It says that making somebody “good” all the time is a form of objectification. You are not allowed to be human, you have to be Good. You have to be liked, you have to be the object, the just and right one all the time. If you move from that image, you are bad. You are Lilith.
This eclipse season has been wild. I described September’s lunar eclipse as a “spell-breaking, revelatory, illusion-shattering and reality-challenging eclipse,” mentioning also that things that we attempt to conceal around this eclipse will not stay hidden for very long.
This past week, I personally experienced the most blatant and disturbing incidence of plagiarism that I’ve experienced so far when someone made lengthy video that reached tens of thousands of people in which they went through my Libra season post slide by slide, making the same points I made and directly quoting my writing as if my thoughts and words were their own. Though this person quickly deleted comments calling attention to their plagiarism, I was notified by people who recognized my writing; it in fact did not stay hidden for long. I’ve experienced many instances of plagiarism before but this was by far the most egregious and has led me to be louder about my feelings on the subject: I will not tolerate plagiarism of any kind. My writing, videos, and anything else I create are all my intellectual property. Intellectual property theft is a felony and will be treated as such. This feels absolutely absurd to even have to say. We all learn not to do this sort of thing in kindergarten.
On the world stage, we’ve seen a slew of repulsive, disturbing revelations in the news, but frankly, I don’t want to draw any further attention to them.
This second eclipse, in Libra conjunct Black Moon Lilith and Mercury, is angry.
It is Chappell Roan repeatedly stating that she is angry, afraid, and suffering and the public being angry that she is not continuing to dance for them like a toy monkey; that she is not being the Good Girl who is only angry and depressed when and how it's convenient for them. She is no longer the Good Object, so she is an ungrateful bitch, and she is Bad. (This eclipse is even conjunct her natal Black Moon Lilith in Libra in her 1st house.)
It’s Courtney Love being angry, problematic, loud, and messy in public and being hated for wrongs both committed and fictitious, blamed for her husband’s death for decades while actual convicted serial killers are talked about with awe bordering on respect or reverence. She isn’t Good and Well-Behaved, so she is crazy, murderous, and Bad.
It’s Britney Spears in 2007, reacting to the media stalking and harassing her and quite literally driving her insane. It’s her being effectively imprisoned indefinitely without basic bodily autonomy and freedom, working like a slave without free access to her own money. It’s the world eventually coming around, begging “Them” to #FreeBritney, as if we, the consumers of media, aren’t essentially the ones who locked her up to begin with. It’s the absurdity of the world suggesting not long after that maybe Britney should have been locked up all along, because now, newly free, she dares to be seen by the public while behaving in ways that seem slightly ‘off’. Even while trying to play the part of the Good Dancing Doll she was trained to be – the “Child-Robot,” to use her own words – she is crazy and she is Bad. Lock her up, get her out of our sight.
All three of these women are Libra risings and all three of them have Lilith in their third houses.* They are the woman who is supposed to be pleasing, pleasant, and Good at all costs to herself, but ultimately will not just sit down, keep her pie hole shut, and spread her legs only when asked. This eclipse is angry at a world in which objectification, injustice, exploitation and unethical practices are normal.
(*Britney Spears and Courtney Love have Black Moon Lilith in the 3rd; Chappell Roan is going through her Black Moon Lilith return in Libra in the 1st house right now, and she has asteroid Lilith in the 3rd. In her natal chart, Chappell also has her 10th house ruler conjunct Pluto and Lilith in her 3rd: being polarizing and disliked for what she has to say and the manner in which she says it is baked into her. But ironically, the more she is Bad, the bigger she will likely get, if she wants to. Incidentally, Britney’s infamous late-2000s ‘breakdown’ even crescendoed while Black Moon Lilith was in her 1st house in Libra, like it is now. May we do much fucking better by Chappell Roan, especially now as she goes through the same transit.)
The reality of Libra is the reality that a human being is multidimensional. Good and Bad and much more. It’s an equinox sign, its season beginning on the day of equal night and day; it is half light and half dark, half good and half bad, half light and half heavy. Libra is a sign that tries to be Good while under immense pressure to deny that all people are also Bad. We are. Fascinatingly, Chappell Roan is currently dealing with ‘backlash’ for publicly addressing the fact that all politicians are at least partly bad and she cannot endorse any candidate; for clearly and passionately stating that she is forever questioning both sides. Heaven forbid the public has to see the heavier, bloodier part of Libra that is more committed to justice and ethics than likeability or prettiness or signaling Goodness.
This eclipse is at 10º Libra and is conjunct Black Moon Lilith and Mercury in Libra. It speaks to anger, power imbalances, desire for equality, shame, speaking up, and perhaps returning to old anger that had been forgotten for some time.
Lilith can be the symbol of empowerment that we often interpret her as based on her Jewish myth, but her anger and autonomy have always come at a cost. In that myth, she didn’t choose the empowered life of the sex-positive girlboss pedestalized in the Western world around 2012, but rather chose to leave the literal Garden of Eden out of self-respect and she roamed the earth in rage, wreaking havoc for eternity. She had to sacrifice her relationship and her paradise and lived out her days in exile, pain and anger, cursed to life as Bad. In Brennan Kettelle’s class on Lilith throughout history, she talked about other potential ancient origins of Lilith that predate the well-known Jewish myth, mentioning additional Lilithian associations that, to me, speak to the dangerous and untamable quality of Lilith. The different interpretations of Lilith combine to create a picture of anger, power imbalance, shame, outcastedness, and animality. She is the part of the human that is still an animal, the part that will never be domesticated. Lilith’s people are the ones who are disenfranchised, ashamed, and justifiably enraged.
This eclipse could be interpreted as Lilith being eclipsed – the anger swept out to sea; the desire for autonomy and equality denied. But what’s interesting about Black Moon Lilith is that it isn’t a physical body in space but the point in the moon’s orbit that is furthest from Earth (exiled as fuck); since she is never visible, can she really be “eclipsed”? For this reason, I can’t really read this eclipse as an extinguishing of Lilithian themes but a Lilithian uprising.
@sisterbride recently shared some very poignant thoughts about eclipse season in which they said: “Eclipses yearn for a redistribution of power. Every other time of the year the Sun, the King, the Ego has the authority to dictate whether an inner planet is visible or invisible in the sky. During eclipses, the sun’s domineering light gets cock-blocked by the earth or the moon. Finally, the prevailing ego perspective gets out of the way and we are able to glimpse at hidden aspects of our patterns, personally and socially.” When the sun is eclipsed, it’s like the king is temporarily removed from his throne. The person who is normally in control is not in control any longer. It’s interesting, too, that this eclipse is in Libra – a sign where the sun is in fall and Mars is in detriment. In so many ways, it says that the person who is typically in power is no longer in power. This may be a good thing or it may be a bad thing. It’s probably both.
This should be an interesting time in world news. What kinds of power shifts will take place? Who will be stepping down? Who will be getting in trouble – revealed to be Bad? If there were ever a time when a woman would take over a man’s post, it’s around this eclipse.
This eclipse is fear of the witch, catharsis through rage, and the perilous fight to be seen as more than an object.
